Cheerleaders Over the Decades
OUR HISTORY
OUR HISTORY
1961 would also become the inaugural debut of the team's first cheerleaders, who were named the Chargettes but, oftentimes, were referred to as the Chargerettes. The director was Phyllis Fleming, former Miss San Diego and Miss Teenage Majorette of America.
During the 1960s, the cheer teams would be renamed The San Diego Charger Cheerleaders, followed by another change in the late 1970s to the Chargerettes. That name would remain until the cheer team was disbanded in 1978.
In 1990, after 11 years without cheerleaders, a new group of ladies would once again grace the sidelines and be introduced as the San Diego Charger Girls. This team would enjoy an extensive run for the next 26 years and became world-renowned. In 2017, the team returned to Los Angeles, and subsequently, the cheerleaders were renamed the 'Los Angeles' Charger Girls, with Lisa Simmons continuing at the helm as their director. There was no Charger Girls Team in 2020 due to the COVID epidemic, and sadly, in 2021, they were disbanded for financial reasons.
