1961 would also become the inaugural debut of the team's first cheerleaders, who were named the Chargettes but, oftentimes, were referred to as the Chargerettes. The director was Phyllis Fleming, former Miss San Diego and Miss Teenage Majorette of America.
Over the years, the cheerleaders' name would change to the San Diego Charger Cheerleaders in the late 60s, then back to the Chargettes in the late 70s, and would be known by this name until 1978 when the team was disbanded. After a 12-year hiatus, the cheerleaders would return to the sidelines in 1990 as the San Diego Charger Girls. This team would enjoy an extensive run for the next 26 years and became world-renowned. In 2017, the team returned to Los Angeles, and subsequently, the cheerleaders were renamed the Los Angeles Charger Girls with Lisa Simmons continuing at the helm as their director. There was not a Charger Girls Team in 2020 due to the COVID epidemic, and sadly, in 2021, they were disbanded for financial reasons.
