1961 would also become the inaugural debut of the team's first cheerleaders, who were named the Chargettes but, oftentimes, were referred to as the Chargerettes. The director was Phyllis Fleming, former Miss San Diego and Miss Teenage Majorette of America.
Sometime during the 1960s, the cheer teams would be renamed The San Diego Charger Cheerleaders, followed by another change in the late 1970s to the Chargerettes
In 1990, after 11 years without cheerleaders, a new cheer team would be unveiled as the San Diego Charger Girls.
